@msoverlandbound Thanks! Those are great tips. Still don’t think I am up for a solo family trip yet.

I don’t mind going out with a group but timing never seems to workout – so my wife and I generally on our own.

Just as a precaution, I let a few select friends/family know where I’m headed and if I’m stopping overnight some where. I then use MotionX GPS app on my phone, which sends them an email or tweet of my GPS location.

@elissa Then there was this one time when @msoverlandbound wasn’t with me and I managed to turn a 4 hour drive into 9.5hrs. 🙂

I tend to be a bit more adventurous, having traveled through Baja, and often way off the beaten path on my own. Thats why I drive a toyota! 🙂

I am so with you on this one, @elissa! When we venture out solo as a family, we stick to well known routes and destinations, and make sure conditions are agreeable. (No foreseeable nasty weather, no snow, etc.) I’m always keeping an eye out for others on the trail, and keep mental note of how far off the beaten path we’re traveling. In this case… there were blue reflectors marking our path everywhere, Jeeps were running back and forth all weekend, and the terrain was moderate. Perfect conditions for us!

We have never done a solo family trip before. We ALWAYS travel with another family in another vehicle. The idea of braking down with no cell reception in my nightmare! Do you have certain criteria that you look for in a solo trip?

– Other than Death Valley, I’ve never off-roaded in CA – any permitting issues? I took ‘da wife up to Peek-a-Boo canyon (not a double entendre) Saturday night – drove up above 6K ft, between the Las Vegas range and the Sheep range. Watched a herd of black tail cross the trail. Nice thing about Vegas, 75% of the state is BLM and drive-able. You just need to stay out of the restricted areas with numbers….
