I always get asked about the wires going from my front bumper to my roof rack.
Those are called “Limb Risers” and they keep brush from slamming into your windshield, getting caught up in expensive gear, and possibly breaking your rig. If you use your rig on the trail or anywhere the brush gets thick, this is an essential bit of kit!
Want to make your own on the cheap?
In this video I explain the basics and step you through creating your own. You will need some hardware, most of which is found on amazon! For the list, go to the end of the article!
Front Loop Detail:
The hardest thing to find is the 3/16th” Stainless Steel Aircraft Cable. The reason is, most sells in 250′ rolls! This is a link to the type of vinyl coated wire rope you need, but we have not found a source for short lengths! You want a +3000 lbs breaking strength.
Other Supplies Needed:
No issues w/ the roof rack sliding forward if you hit anything a bit too robust? Any thoughts on how to mount the top edge if not using a roof rack?
i just made my own yesterday before this was posted.
an easy way to make a front mounting point if you dont have a bumper with headlight guards is to use a couple of antenna mounts for a hood channel.
I have a front mounting point but no roof rack so working on a solution at that end.
You could always drill the roof and add a backing plate under the headliner to mount a stud or eye bolt
Jason,
I have the ARB front bumper, but without headlight guards. Could you provide more info on your solution? Thank you.

Not to be over critical, but drilling a hole on top of roof rack will allow water to enter the tube causing internal rusting. Drill horizontally into tube, or fill hole with good silicone to seal it.There are also tubing clamps that can used without drilling. Cables still don’t protect the two way radio aerial. No solution there that I know of unless you mount the aerial back near the windshield. I’m sure there is a reason for mounting it on the brush bar.
Very nice video and information. Seems like one of those tings that any one can figure out but there you have done it already for us. Thanks, nice work!
