When you are in the wild, you need to bring plenty of water with you. As a general rule of thumb, you need two (2) gallons per person per day. Simple right? Well depending on the water sources available, it may not be! if there is no clean drinking water available, you will need to bring it with you.
If I’ve got just a couple people, I can get away with the five gallon container I have mounted on the back of the truck.
For convenience, I also load up the bottles and keep them in the cab. For these kind of trips, I quickly learned that easy access to water is 2nd to having water. If you get thirsty, you don’t want to have to stop the rig, unlock the water container, pour it into a smaller container, etc.
This water bottle is pricey (MSR), but it goes with the MSR filter so they got me!
Great bottle. If you throw down for one of these, make it last. Goes with MSR Filter
In the case where you have water at your location, there are very few places where you don’t need to filter your water. Unfortunately, good water filters are expensive. It is however, part of the basic supplies required when going off the grid.
Very good $$$ water filter. Goes with the MSR Water Bottle $$$ 🙂
If I have more people, plan a longer trip, or I am headed to the desert or high altitude, I need to bring more right. My second container is a cheapy I picked up at REI. It is perfect for quick access and now I go through that container before hitting the truck mounted Jerry can. It has a easy spigot and cost me 15 bucks.
Cheap and easy access. Great little spout too. Got mine at REI.
